Field guide and game ranger salary: what lodges pay (2026)
Salaries from real 2024 to 2026 South African job ads, what a live-in package adds, and the thin public record elsewhere.
In South Africa, recent job ads offer a newly qualified field guide (often called a game ranger) roughly R7,500 to R11,000 a month, and a head guide R15,000 to R20,000, almost always with a room and meals on top. Outside South Africa, lodges hardly ever publish guide pay, so the picture there is thinner: legal minimums and small salary surveys, which we set out below for what they are.
We built this from job ads that state a salary, official minimum-wage orders and the few salary surveys that cover guiding. Every figure links to its source at the bottom of the page.
South Africa: what the ads say
These are real ads from the last two years that named a salary. All are monthly, before tax.
| Role | Where | Monthly pay | Ad date |
|---|---|---|---|
| Trainee (SANParks and CATHSSETA guiding programme) | Bontebok National Park | R2,695 stipend for 6 months of training, then R3,500 for a 12-month placement | Dec 2025 |
| Field guide, NQF2 and Apprentice Trails | Remote lodge | R7,500 to start, negotiable | 2026 |
| Field guide, FGASA Level 1 or 2 | Luxury lodge, Pilanesberg | About R9,000 | Sep 2026 |
| Qualified field guide, Level 2 | Big Five reserve, North West | R9,000 to R10,000 | Jul 2024 |
| Qualified field guide, Level 2 | Madikwe | R11,000 fixed, up to R20,000 with incentives for walks and night drives | Early 2025 |
| Field guide, Level 2 and Lead Trails, 2 to 5 years in | Luxury lodge, Kalahari | R15,000 to R17,500 (the ad gives both) | Jun 2026 |
| Head guide | Limpopo | R15,833 to R16,667 | May 2024 |
| Head field guide, 5+ years | Hoedspruit | R15,000 to R20,000 | Feb 2026 |
Most ads still say “market related” instead of giving a number, so treat the table as the visible part of the market, not all of it. For a sense of the floor, South Africa’s national minimum wage is R30.23 an hour from March 2026, which is about R5,200 a month for a 40-hour week.
Live-in changes the sums
The salary is only part of the package, because almost every lodge guide job is live-in. Ads typically include your own room (sometimes shared), meals while you are on duty, uniform and laundry. Some specify single accommodation only, which matters if you are a couple. You work in blocks and go home in between: recent ads show cycles of 6 weeks on and 2 off, 21 days on and 7 off, and 3 weeks on and 1 off.
Tips are harder to pin down. In South Africa guides are usually tipped separately from the rest of the lodge team, whose tips are pooled, and Kariega’s guidance to guests suggests at least R200 per guest per day for the guide. In Kenya, guidance to guests is often US$10 to US$20 per guest per day. No one publishes how much of a guide’s income tips make up, and it swings with the season and the lodge.
Medical aid and retirement cover are less common. One Madikwe ad offered R1,600 a month towards health cover after probation, plus a 7.5% pension contribution, but most ads don’t mention either.
Botswana, Kenya and the rest: pay stays private
We looked for guide ads with a stated salary in Botswana, Namibia, Kenya, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe and found none. Lodges there negotiate pay privately, so the table below is only what is on the public record.
| Country | What’s known |
|---|---|
| Botswana | The legal minimum for hotel, catering and entertainment work is P9.06 an hour. A small survey (under 20 people) puts travel guides at roughly P3,300 to P10,000 a month. |
| Kenya | A 2025 survey of travel guides puts starting pay at about KES 19,000 to KES 53,000 a month. Guide grading through the Kenya Professional Safari Guides Association (Bronze, Silver, Gold) affects which jobs you can get. |
| Tanzania | The legal minimum for a tour guide is TZS 320,000 a month from 1 January 2026, set by the 2025 private-sector minimum wage order. |
| Namibia | The national minimum wage is N$18 an hour from January 2025. We found no guide salary data. |
| Zambia | A small survey (under 20 people) shows travel guides at roughly K3,400 to K9,800 a month. |
| Zimbabwe | The general minimum rose to US$270 a month from June 2026. We found no current tourism-sector rate or guide data. |
Minimum wages are floors, not what a lodge guide earns, and surveys this small are a rough guide at best. If you are offered a job, ask for the full package in writing: salary, leave cycle, accommodation, meals, how tips work and what happens with medical cover.
Seeing a salary on SafariCareers
When an employer gives a salary, we show it on the job page. Where they don’t, you’ll see “Not disclosed”, and you can ask about pay politely in your application. Every live guiding job is on our field guide jobs page.
Pay, minimum wages and tipping norms change, so confirm the current figures with the employer before you accept a job.
